The Wedding of the Year: Don’t forget your leash!
Will the bride have Kibbles ‘n Bits? Or perhaps just a bone to chew?
That’s where my mind wanders when I think about the world’s most expensive doggy wedding ever, which happened this past weekend in New York City. Arranged by her owner, Wendy Diamond, the Coton de Tulear pooch named Baby Hope will bark her ‘I dos’ in an extravagant ceremony and reception held at the Jumeirah Essex House Hotel.
The whole soiree reportedly cost around $250,000. According to The New York Observer, the current Guinness World Record for the most expensive animal wedding rings in at a modest $32,000. Ok…maybe not so modest considering that the national average forhumans right now is around $27,000. So where did Baby Hope spend all that cash? For starters she had lighting guru Bentley Meeker who worked on the weddings of Chelsea Clinton and Catherine Zeta Jones.
Then there’s the seven-piece Hank Lane Orchestra who has performed at the American Ballet Theater’s Spring Gala in the past, plus celeb wedding planner Harriette Rose Katz. Oh and don’t forget the canine couture gown, courtesy of Kleinfeld. What I wouldn’t give to see Baby Hope surface on an episode of Say Yes to the Dress. But don’t worry, the animal extravaganza isn’t all for show.
Wendy Diamond is a New York animal advocate and she’s hoping to use the event to raise awareness about animal rescue and welfare, as well as canine cancer. The wedding was originally planned for her pooch Lucky Diamond, who unfortunately lost her battle with cancer last month. As for the groom, he is a tie-dyed poodle named Chilly. I just hope they find the perfect first dance song. There’s “Hound Dog,” of course, or Bob Dylan’s “If Dogs Run Free.” Maybe “Who Let the Dogs Out” or something by Snoop Dogg? So many possibilities…

Best,
